The pulp (dental nerve), a cavity consisting of blood vessels, connective tissue and nerve tracts, is cleaned of infected or dead tissue. If the caries in the tooth is too advanced and the nerve has already been damaged, there is usually a need for such an operation.

Root canal treatment may be necessary in the following cases:

• acute pulpitis (severely painful tooth caused by inflammation of the dental nerve)
• necrosis of the pulp (dead dental nerve)
• deeply broken tooth or tooth fragment
• Inflammation or cysts at the root tip
• incomplete and/or failed root canal treatment (revision)
• for anchoring a post crown

The only alternative to root canal treatment is extraction, i.e. the removal of the tooth. The resulting gap can be closed with a bridge, an implant or a prosthesis. However, the natural tooth is always preferable, as root canal treatment can prevent unnecessary damage to neighboring teeth and other complications that cannot be ruled out during and after an extraction. In addition, you can retain a sensory and aesthetically unique tooth for years without any restrictions, thus ensuring a safe chewing experience.

The aim of this treatment is to work through the complex root canal system inside the tooth and remove bacteria and infected tissue so that it can be sealed tightly at the end.

In our practice, we offer root canal treatment that meets international gold standards. This includes the use of rubber dams, the latest mechanical nickel-titanium root canal preparation systems, electronic length determination, a surgical microscope with up to 24x magnification, a clearly defined and well thought-out irrigation protocol and thermoplastic filling methods for every root canal treatment. This procedure is very gentle for you as a patient and offers you an above-average success rate for the preservation of your own tooth.

Since January 2004, however, the legislator has prescribed particularly strict guidelines for root canal treatments. The assumption of costs by health insurance companies is linked to certain criteria and not all dental services are "automatically" covered (100%).

If, in addition, certain health insurance guidelines are not met, root canal treatment and all associated treatment measures must be paid for purely privately in accordance with the applicable GOZ.
